Black gram (Vigna mungo) is a highly nutritious, drought-resistant legume crop from the Indian subcontinent, also known as urad bean or black matpe bean. It is used whole or split into dal for cooking, provides significant protein and carbs, and is also cultivated as a green manure or fodder crop. The plant is an erect or sub-erect annual herb with yellow flowers and dark, cylindrical pods containing small black seeds.
